I started this blog because my strength in strategic planning and analysis, and my will to win, are the greatest contributions I can make to any movement for social justice. As Frederick Buechner said, “Your vocation in life is where your greatest joy meets the world's greatest need.”
stra·te·gic: relating to the identification of long-term or overall aims and interests and the means of achieving them. (Oxford definition)
I plan to write about strategic approaches to building progressive power, focused on results. This includes developments in all three areas of the Wellstone triad: grassroots organizing, good policy, and electoral campaigns.
I’ll highlight organizations and coalitions that are winning and what that says about the future of building power. I’ll analyze what Democrats and progressives are doing that isn’t working. I’ll provide reading lists and resources on strategy and politics. I’ll bring you brief daily posts, plus a weekly long-ish read.
SWOT Sunday.* Long-ish read about the bigger strategic picture.
- Message Monday. Highlighting messaging and communications.
- Take Action Tuesday. Highlighting effective and important actions.
- Winning Wednesday. Highlighting a victory that moves us forward.
- Team Thursday. Highlighting an organization or coalition that is effective in one or more of the Wellstone triad (see Yes! But How page) :
*SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats, a widely-used strategic planning and analysis matrix. Using this matrix can give you a 360° view of the situation inside and outside your organization or project.
People this blog is designed for include:
- Those who are committed to a strategic and results-oriented approach to progressive politics, advocacy and organizing, especially leaders and funders.
- Those trying to figure out how to use their own talents to make the world a better place.
- Reporters and writers in the space.
What I hope to accomplish:
- Connect with people in the above categories.
- Connect like-minded people with each other.
- Build awareness and support for people and organizations who are successfully building progressive power.
My long-term dream is creating a network like the Mont Pelerin Society, but for progressives. As detailed in the book Inventing the Future, the Mont Pelerin Society, a global network, has quietly developed, promoted, and helped implement neo-liberal ideas with great success since the 1940s.
