Here’s a cheerful story for Team Tuesday.
Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, a village in suburban Westchester County, has a fun way to reduce, recycle, and reuse. It’s called the Take It Or Leave It (TILI) Garage. It’s a project of the town’s ZWAT (Zero Waste Advisory Task Force). They do all kinds of neat stuff, check it out here.
Weather permitting, the Garage (it is a two car garage) is open on Sundays to all comers. It’s volunteer-run. People can just drop in and shop (everything's free), and/or drop off items to give away, if they meet the organization’s criteria. Some things available there now: old-fashioned (not video) games, kid’s bikes, bike helmets, skateboards, vinyl, skis, a high chair, wine glasses, books…a lot of useful stuff.
Imagine how cheap this place is to run, and how much stuff it could be keeping out of a landfill.
On their website, they have long lists of other places by category where you might find good homes for things you no longer need, as well as where you might get something repaired. You have no excuse for putting it in the garbage! Good job on the TILI Garage. Maybe you’ll be inspired to get your town to try something like this too.
